Popular Joburg street to get a new name?

Name changes within South Africa are quite common and a major one is in the works.

William Nicol Drive in Sandton is one of the country's most well-known street names, but it could be changed soon.

The ANC in Johannesburg has been working on the name change from William Nicol to Winnie Mandela Drive for the last few years - and it seems like it has made some headway.

There have been many petitions and proposals in favour of the move and the process was formally started in March 2021.

At the time it was said that the change was welcomed, although there were some negative sentiments towards the idea, while the late former mayor of Johannesburg, Geoffry Makhubo, defended the move:

From 1948 to 1958, William Nicol was the administrator of the former Transvaal during the road's construction.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was, of course, an iconic South African anti-apartheid activist and politician; she held multiple positions in government and was also married to former president Nelson Mandela.

Mama Winnie passed away in 2018 and many feel that this would be a wonderful way to honour her legacy.
