SA would be boring without white people, says Malema

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has addressed scores of supporters in Bloemfontein following his latest court appearance.

Malema spoke on a range of issues, including the country's white population, saying South Africa would be weird without them.

"There is no narrative in the EFF that says the white minority should be driven to the sea. South Africa will be a boring county without white people. We compliment one another.

"Can you imagine one day you wake up and there are no trees? That place will look so strange," Malema said.

The EFF leader appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Friday on charges related to the Riotous Assemblies Act. The state is accusing him of inciting people to illegally occupy vacant land.

The matter was postponed to July 27.

Malema told his supporters that the whole of the EFF is on trial.

"Land expropriation without compensation is your case, it is not Julius Malema that is on trial but the EFF because the EFF demanded that the right thing must be done," he said.

"We are here not because we raped, we are not here because we killed anyone, we are here not because we stole anything. We are here for having recited the Freedom Charter that the people must occupy the land wherever they choose to do so."

His defence team has launched an application in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, challenging the validity of the charge and claiming that it is outdated and could not be applied under current South African law.
