ActionSA: South Africans 'gatvol' of poor policing

The party has given Cele three months to respond to its demands.

Dozens of Action SA members marched to Cele's office in Pretoria on Thursday to hand over a memorandum outlining what it believes to be the deteriorating state of police stations around the country.

Earlier this week, angry residents of Riverlea, south of Johannesburg, took to the streets in anger at violence linked to illegal mining activities in their community.

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said South Africans have lost all trust in the SAPS, and are “gatvol” of the high crime rate.

"As we have seen in recent events in communities across South Africa, our residents are being left defenceless as the South African police continue to fail to respond to emergencies or do not have appropriate equipment.

"Failure in South African police stations is evident in South Africa where the murder rate has returned to 2000s levels after reaching its lowest point in 2012. Sexual violence is on the increase and robbery with aggravating circumstances is reaching some of its highest levels yet," said Mashaba.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed the arrest of 79 suspected illegal miners in Riverlea on Tuesday.
