What not to wear on the first date
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
There are some things that no man should ever wear on a first date, and we’ve listed some of them below.
Times are changing and, although people have become much more accepting of the weird and sometimes not so wonderful, first date etiquette remains the same. There are some things you just don’t do on a first date: don’t pick your nose, don’t order a messy meal, don’t order something you can’t pronounce, and don’t flirt with the waiter/waitress.
Those are just some of the things you shouldn’t do on a first date, but we have one final tip on first dates – what not to wear. Gentlemen, this one’s for you.
Do we even need to explain this one? It’s 2015, not 1998. You don’t need to have your phone clipped onto your belt anymore. You don’t need a utility belt. You aren’t Batman (although we know how much you wish you were). It wasn’t cool in the 90s (not one bit), and it’s not cool now.
Unless the date’s taking place at the beach or on the hottest place on the planet, you really don’t need to be wearing flip flops (or any type of sandals for that matter) to a first date. We get it, your feet are important and stuff, but please, no flip flops on the first date. Just, don’t.
You might be tempted to show-off your impressive biceps or your well-toned calves to your date, but believe us, there’ll be plenty of time for that later…if you don’t show up to the date in shorts or vests. We aren’t going to the gym, we aren’t training. We’re going for a date at an upmarket establishment – the least you can do is dress the part.
Yes, we took it there. This post went from light-hearted and fun to surprisingly serious in a heartbeat. We’ve all been hurt in the past, maybe we aren’t over that hurt yet, but the last thing anyone wants to hear on the first date is how your ex cheated on you, broke your heart, and how you no longer trust women. Let the fantasy of you being open and ready for new love last a few dates.
Wearing your heart on your sleeve has always been encouraged. Being open and not afraid to reveal things about yourself is a good thing, don’t get us wrong. But nothing ruins a first date (and a potential relationship) more than when you reveal a little too much about yourself and things get awkward. Nothing ruins a first date quicker than when you blurt out “I love you!” on the first date.
