Remarkable Durban boy sets sights on Rubik's cube record
Nine-year-old Sethu Xolo stunned teachers at Glenashley Junior Primary by completing a Rubik's cube in less than 30 seconds.
Nine-year-old Sethu Xolo, a grade three learner at Glenashley Junior Primary in Durban North, has everyone impressed with his ability to solve a Rubik's cube in 25 seconds flat.
He has become quite good at the brainteaser in the six months since he was first introduced to Ernő Rubik's toy.
Xolo, whose best time at the 2018 World Cube Association tournament was 23 seconds, has his sights set on becoming a world record holder. Though he remains dedicated to his school work, every day he makes time to watch videos of people solving cubes to improve his skills.
His teachers are very proud of him and, while they encourage him to keep honing his talent, they do try to keep him focused on achieving high scores academically as well. Xolo's teacher Sam Rajsmus tells Northglen News: "I had to ban him from using it in class otherwise he wouldn’t concentrate on anything else. As teachers we are very proud of him."
The inventor of the Rubik's cube worked for one month to solve it, which proves that Xolo has a natural talent for puzzle-solving. The fastest time on record for solving a Rubik's cube is four seconds; if Xolo continues to dedicate himself to the Rubik's cube the way he has, he could easily match - or even beat - that record.
This smart young man definitely has a bright future ahead of him.
