On a recent trip to the Kgalagadi National Park, Louis le Roux and his wife Kraai found themselves staying in a cabin that was right in the middle of a gathering of lions.

The couple told LatestSightings.com that in the mornings they could spot lionesses on the porch of the cabin. Louis even attempted to get as close to them as possible. Luckily, reason (and his wife's warnings) prevailed, and he watched the lionesses from the safety of the cabin.

Louis may have been out of the lionesses' reach, but he was still close enough to see what happened when a brown hyena sauntered into the space where the lionesses were resting.

As soon as the lionesses sensed the hyena coming, they got into position - ready to stalk and attack the animal. Louis was awestruck, with his heart beating in extra time and his breathing uneven, but he managed to capture the stand-off in the video below.

The hyena seems to have wandered into the lionesses' camp on a whim, and does not appear to be afraid of what might happen at all. But when the lionesses give chase, the hyena does begin to run for its life. At a point, up to six lionesses are on the hyena's tail. The hyena manages to escape by a hair!

Louis says the time spent at Kgalagadi National Park and the opportunity to bear witness to this battle of wits in the wild has reminded him of what a privilege it is to be African.
