Great white jumps up, bares teeth at Massachusetts man at sea
Updated | By The Workzone with Barney Simon
Marine biologist Greg Skomal came within inches of the jaws of a great white shark during a routine tagging trip in Massachusetts.
Marine biologist and shark expert Greg Skomal was standing out on the edge of a boat carrying out routine tagging operations.
He expected to see ocean predators and record them for his research, but he did not expect that he would narrowly escape having his legs bitten off.
Greg was standing on an extended part of the research boat when a great white shark swam under the structure, lifted itself halfway out of the water, and snapped at him.
For a harrowing few seconds, Greg saw the predator's sharp teeth bared. A colleague of his shouted "woah, it jumped right out of the water!". Greg remains calm but is in disbelief as he asks, "Did you see that!"
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy said that it had received numerous reports of great white sharks breaching the water like this and warned people to be careful: "White sharks are wild and unpredictable animals. This is a good reminder of the importance of not becoming complacent and always staying vigilant when in or on the water."
Thankfully, the shark did not make any more attempts to make contact with Greg or any other occupants of the boat.
