Disturbing footage shows a black man being forced into a coffin by white men

The disturbing video shows one of the white men, believed to be a farmer, ordering the terrified black man to "get in, I want to throw some petrol", while the other man filming the incident can be heard saying "put a snake in".

This incident comes a few months after two black men were beaten to death by white farmers who reportedly wanted to avenge an attack on an elderly landowner in Parys.

The video has caused a stir on social media, with some condemning the brutality and calling it racist, while others, however, said this came as punishment for a crime the black man carried out. The video has sparked debate about racial conflicts in the country yet again.

Although South Africa put an end to the apartheid regime more than two decades ago, racism remains a key challenge to the South African democracy. At the beginning of 2016, former KwaZulu-Natal estate agent Penny Sparrow made headlines after she compared black people to monkeys. She was later handed a sentence of a R5,000 fine or 12 months imprisonment. High Court Judge Mabel Jansen also sparked a racism row earlier in the year after claiming that rape was part of the black culture.
