This is why your toddler may be ignoring you
Updated | By The Workzone with Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp
We take a look at the reasons your toddler could be ignoring you as set forth by paediatrician and toddler expert, Dr Cathryn.
There are several things that we find ourselves learning on a daily basis. From trying to figure out why our kids behave the way they do, to fighting the need to want to scream and shout when you've lost your patience.
And, most of the time, it can be extremely confusing and challenging to try and understand from your kid's perspective.
If you've ever asked yourself these questions: "Why does it seem like your child won't listen unless you scream?" or "Why do you have to repeat yourself so many times?", then here's why...
According to paediatrician and toddler expert, Dr Cathryn, "toddlers ignore us because they need to feel some control in their life."
Here are some things you can do when your toddler ignores you.
- First, find positive ways to help you child feel more in control. For instance, choices, involve choosing snacks, what to wear, what to play, and so on.
- Instead of saying, "No, you can't have an ice cream right now", try saying, "Oh, what a great idea. Let's have an ice cream the next time we go to the park next to the ice cream store."
- Squat down and make eye contact when asking your child to do something.
- Keep it short. Most kids stop listening after about five words.
Dr Cathryn also mentions this sound additional advice: "Remember, your toddler needs to feel seen and heard in general, before good listening will happen. Play it silly, make it fun. Say something like, I wonder if you can get your PJs on before I can count to 10. Only tigers can do that...but maybe you can too." (Instagram)
