When Zanmari Kriel, a grade two learner from Laerskool Danie Malan in Pretoria, returned to school after being absent for five months, she was surprised that all her fellow learners and teachers were wearing beanies.
In April, Kriel was diagnosed with Choriocarcinoma, a rare cancer that is usually diagnosed in adult women. She received an emergency operation to remove the tumour that suffocated her ovaries. After the operation, Kriel received chemotherapy which resulted in hair loss.
Kriel's primary school shared a video of the guard of honour the learners and teachers gave her upon her return. The video has since gone viral, being viewed more than 25,000 times on social media.
