Top tips from an expert for when newborns wake up at night...

We all could use a few tips now and then...
Being a parent to a newborn baby can be anything but a walk in the park, because they can be a bit fussy settling in outside the belly.
This is why we wanted to share some tips from an expert in the field, Kim West, who refers to herself as The Sleep Lady.

Here are five tips that she has shared that will help you when your newborn wakes up at night.
1. Use dim or ambient lighting when tending to baby at night
This is sort of a no-brainer, bright light can be blinding and disruptive, so set the tone with low lighting. This will create a calmer environment for baby and also mimic what they had when they were in the womb.
2. Try using a white noise machine at night
Now, in our opinion, this is a great suggestion. However, there is no need to go out and spend money, because babies are expensive as it is. Instead you could use YouTube or Spotify and download white noise compilations and play them over a Bluetooth speaker.
Alternatively, you could just leave a vacuum cleaner on, or a fan or even do your washing at night, the sounds of the all these mimic white noise and comfort baby through their sleep.
3. Use a sling or baby carrier during the day, your baby may be craving close contact with you
This will help them sleep for longer, knowing that mama or papa is nearby. You will be surprised at how physical touch can make the world of difference.
4. Expose your baby to natural daylight to help their circadian rhythm
This basically refers to your sleep-wake pattern. So when the baby sees daylight, they slowly begin to recognise that it is time to wake up, whilst when it is dark, it is time to sleep.
Setting up the room to appear dark during nap time can also help baby have a longer sleep.

5. Limit your intake of caffeine if you are breastfeeding, as this may stimulate baby
We know this may be tough considering you need your caffeine drive to stay awake, but try natural boosters such as smoothies and water does wonders.
