RECIPE: Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp’s wonderfully creative cake
Updated | By Elana Afrika-Bredenakmp
I believe that a cake is only as good as the fun you had while making it - here is how you can rope in your kids for some colourful foodie fun!
According to that rule, this cake is simply delicious!
I made this with my girls, and it was such a fun bonding experience filled with laughter and moments as sweet as the final product. Made with the staples of any kitchen pantry, this cake is good for introducing children to the world of baking, as well as giving them the chance to grow their autonomy a little more in the kitchen.

Also, get as creative as you like as you raid your cupboards for anything and everything to decorate it with – we used pink food colouring to make a pink cake!
METHOD
- Cream together 1 cup sugar with ½ cup butter, and then 2 eggs (1 at a time), and stir in 2 tsp vanilla essence.
- Combine 1 ½ cups flour with just under 2 tsp of baking powder and mix in well with the creamed mixture.
- Finally, stir in ½ cup of milk and mix well before pouring into a greased pan of your choice and baking at 180° C for 30-40 minutes (or 20-25 minutes for cupcakes).
- Your cake is ready when it bounces back into shape when lightly pressed.
Decorate before or after baking – or both – but most importantly, have fun!
Voila!
