Mom tries to build reading habits with her toddler
Updated | By The Workzone with Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp
They say that your child mimics you for the most part, so why not encourage some good habits?
As parents, we do try our best to be the best we can be for our kids.
And sometimes that means stepping out of the comfortable and moving into uncharted territory - and that requires lots of patience.
But we have to realise that if we don't try, then we will never know if it will work.

@meandmytotugc Trying to build better reading habits in myself and toddler but didn't expect this to work so fast😅 I literally sat down with my own book and started reading (only got through 1 page before this) #toddlersreading #betterreadinghabits #meandmytot #toddlermom #boymom ♬ original sound - Chelsea & Cam aka Jacob
Mom didn't want to show her excitement because if you are a parent who has tried something new, then you will know that excitement can sometimes get a negative response. It's all about catching them in the best mood.
But it was so wonderful to see her feel good when he mirrored her actions.
And isn't that what we all want as parents, to feel like we are passing on something fulfilling to our kids?
One person even commented: "I'm a library assistant for youth services and lemme tell you, you did everything right! and even if they can't read right now you're building on". (TikTok)
According to the Young Readers Foundation: "Reading is an exercise for the mind. It helps kids calm down and relax, opening doors of new knowledge to enlighten their minds. Kids who read grow up to have better cognitive skills." (Young Readers Foundation)
So, there's your proof, reading essentially helps your kids in their development, just in case you needed the facts.
