But that doesn't mean that we have to feel like sitting ducks as parents. We have to make the effort to pave a safe path for them when it comes to browsing the internet.

Safety first in every aspect is pretty much the number one thing when you become a parent.
Here are some helpful safety tips when it comes to having some sense of control and peace of mind when your kids are using the world wide web.
Setting passwords and restrictions
This assists in keeping them in a somewhat safe online space. Inform your kids not to share their password, and chat with them about their online usage often. Hacking is real and is possible even with passwords and restrictions.
Teach your kids
Teaching your kids how to navigate through sites and emails will help them learn. Have a list of things to watch out for, like don't click links from untrusted sources, don't open attachments, etc.
Time limits
Just as you would have TV time (a designated time for watching TV), you should have browsing time/online time. Prolonged use and unsupervised use of the internet can lead to unhealthy screen time habits.
Install security software
Having good security software installed on your devices is an integral part of keeping your kids safe. This helps protect your kids from harmful sites and content.
Protecting your private information
Teach your kids how to protect their personal information. Not giving out their names, addresses, phone numbers, etc to anyone over the web.

Monitor their online behaviour
Make sure to play an active role in monitoring your kids' online interactions. Of course, communicate this to them. It is not about infringing on their privacy or trust, but the world in general can be a crazy place.
Emergency protocol
Kids should know what to do in case of an emergency. Contact the police or report anything that feels wrong.
Sharing online
Sharing photos or videos online should not be allowed without permission. Explaining to them that this can essentially be used in the wrong way is important. This way they understand why.
