We take a look at twenty words that are overused and a replacement word to use instead.
It can be quite strenuous to expand your vocabulary in a world where sometimes you just want to get your point across universally.
Because the reality is that not everyone's first language is English.
But nevertheless, it is recommended to learn and expand your vocabulary. Not just to exercise your brain, but also to encourage word enhancement in others.
In saying that we found a resource that dictates the most commonly used words and what to use instead of those common words.
Top on the list is 'amazing'. In recent years this word has become the 'go-to' word to describe even the most mediocre of things or experiences.
For future reference, if you really think something is amazing, then it should be in line with its meaning, which describes it "causing astonishment, great wonder, or surprise.” Otherwise, a simple good, or great should suffice.
Then there's 'a lot of'. These words just sound really primary, and if you're presenting to someone at work, or speaking to a customer, it doesn't sound appealing.
Think of words like "copious,” “numerous,” “plentiful,” “myriad,” or even “oodles,” if you’re keeping it casual. (MSN)
This one can be a bit confusing for some. 'Interesting'. Because it has been used so often and in such varied ways, it can be confusing.
"Merriam-Webster’s definition of “interesting” is “holding the attention; arousing interest.” Be more specific by choosing a synonym like “engaging,” “gripping,” “riveting,” or “captivating.” (MSN)
'Nice' - this one has gotten many a person in trouble. When your partner asks you how do they look, and you say 'nice'. Best believe it is less than desirable to hear that as a response.
Try thinking more about personalising the sentence...In case you are stuck, use your dictionary.
In some cultures, this word has a negative connotation. 'Big', so instead of using it and getting into trouble, think of other words such as colossal, massive, vast, ample, bulky, hefty, immense, extensive, enormous, astronomical, or even gargantuan.
Because if anything the right adjective can paint the most appealing picture.
'Bad', so often it can be the only word that comes to mind, but it really is so bland and vague when you describing something or a feeling. Here are some other great alternatives, "crummy, lousy, or even abysmal, atrocious, or deplorable."
