You could soon wash your hair with chicken-feather shampoo

Each year, an astonishing number of chickens are slaughtered in South Africa. The feathers and other waste from this process end up in landfills, and this is the problem that researchers at the newly opened Biorefinery Industry Development Facility at the Centre of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Durban are working on. 

One such solution is a shampoo derived from discarded chicken feathers.

According to Dr Bruce Sithole, a researcher at the CSIR, chicken feathers have a high concentration of keratin (90%), and extracting that protein is very valuable for producing cosmetics.
