"We need to focus on today" - Legendary Olympic swimmer Penny Heyns on lockdown

The legendary South African swimmer Penny Heyns joined the Scenic Drive to talk about the postponement of the Olympic Games and how to keep your head above water during lockdown.

Penelope Heyns or better known as Penny Heyns is one of South Africa's most celebrated athletes. 

Heyns is a former South African swimmer, who is best known for being the only woman in the history of the Olympic Games to have won both the 100 m and 200 m breaststroke events - at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games!

This made her South Africa's first Olympic gold medallist after apartheid. 

Heyns is regarded as one of the greatest breaststroke swimmers.

The athlete joined the Scenic Drive to talk about how she keeps herself positive in such an uncertain time. 

What is Penny busy with?

"I'm also at home. I am on a farm - so it's not so bad. I've been living on the farm for the past seven years.

"I still do coaching. I also do mental coaching."

"After the Olympic Games were postponed - I've been in contact with many of the top athletes. The athletes understand the situation. They now have more time to train to get better."

Isolation

"We need to learn something new. We need to be more creative. We need to challenge ourselves. We need to improve ourselves."

"We need to focus on today - we should not focus on the future. The only thing we can control is the moment we are in now."
