When the men working on repairing the roads in the Harding area of Kwa-Zulu Natal spread shale by the roadside, they did not think twice about the way the fine rock twinkled.

It was not long before the rocks were traced to a nearby quarry and residents of KwaMachi, a small rural village, descended on the area to dig for gold

Yes, the people of KwaMachi believe the rock in the quarry contains gold. Many of the novice gold panners are determined to find enough gold to earn large amounts of money that will allow them to feed their families and build better homes.

People have placed all their hopes on the gold, but these may soon be dashed. It is more than likely that the sparkly rock is just a mineral called pyrite.

News of the fool's gold (the alternative name for pyrite) has reached Reddit, where people are speculating about how long it will be before the government gets involved in the gold rush.

The massive amount of digging on the hill has caused it to become unstable and, while a landslide was reported, no one was injured.
