Capel used two vials of his own blood to create his matric exam artwork - and completed the painting over three days.

The theme of the art practical was 'Nature or Nurture' - and Capel decided to investigate the issue of psychopathy.

Capel investigated the lives of three serial killers, Keith Hunter Jesperson, Danny Rollung and Durban-born Zwelethu Mthethwa who were also artists.

“I specifically chose killers who are artists because we have to show artist research in our visual journals as well,” said Capel in a previous interview with Times Live.

Capel used his own blood because it felt like the most effective medium in conveying the message of ‘blood is thicker than water’ and ‘nature is stronger than nurture’.

Capel continued by saying that art is up for interpretation.
