LISTEN: The Scenic Drive weighs in on Port Elizabeth's new name - Gqeberha

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthetwa recently made several changes to the names of towns, cities and airports in the Eastern Cape.

The government has already gazetted the changes of geographical names in the Eastern Cape.

Port Elizabeth, is now known as Gqeberha. The Port Elizabeth International Airport also got a name change. It will for now be called Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport. Stuurman was a political activist who fought against the Dutch and British colonial administration and his exploits included escaping twice from Robben Island.

East London airport is now King Phalo Airport.

The Scenic Drive team weighed in on the new name changes, questioning the reasoning behind the decision.

"Why? Why are we changing names? Do you think people of that area feel that it's more important to rename the airports than eat or proper schools for their children or proper housing or flushing toilets," said Rian van Heerden

"Now, everything else has to change."

"Do people even care for new names?" Van Heerden added.
