History of Spur: Founder Allen Ambor tells all in new book
The popular SA steakhouse franchise Spur was founded in 1967 when Allen Ambor invested R4,000 into opening the Golden Spur in Newlands, Cape Town.
After studying and working at a steakhouse to pay for his studies in Johannesburg, Allen Ambor, the founder of Spur, moved to Cape Town.
From the start, Ambor knew that he would live in Cape Town.

But it all started with R4,000 and his mother's friend making the famous pink sauce.
Ambor opened the first Spur in 1967 in Newlands, Cape Town.

"People have never seen anything like it - service was fast, the place was clean and lively. We’ve carried that down the years. People of all races and religions could be happy together and enjoy the food."
Ambor grew it into an empire that included more than 500 franchises under the Spur, Panarottis, John Dory’s, and RocoMamas brands.
Ambor sat down with Rian van Heerden for a candid interview.
