'Godfather' and 'Thief' star James Caan dies at age 82

On Thursday, the American actor who portrayed Sonny Corleone in 'The Godfather' passed away.

James Edmund Caan was an American actor who was nominated for several awards, including four Golden Globes, an Emmy, and an Oscar. Caan was awarded a motion pictures star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1978. 

"It is with tremendous regret that we inform you of the demise of Jimmy on the evening of July 6," his family stated in a statement posted to Twitter.

The family requests that the public continue to respect their privacy during this trying time. "The family appreciates the outpouring of love and genuine condolences."
