Don't go near the 'flaming jump rope' at the full moon party
On Ko Pha-ngan in Thailand revellers attend a party on the beach to celebrate the full moon. They each try to jump over a flaming rope without getting burned - but not many are successful.
A full moon, some drinks, and the beachfront sound like the ingredients for a perfect party, right? In Thailand people take beach parties to the next level each time they throw a "full moon party". Revellers gather on the beach to celebrate the full moon and, perhaps because it doesn't seem like there's anything more fun to do, they try to skip using a flaming rope.
With everyone gathered in a circle, the flaming rope is swung in anticipation of a few brave souls jumping in and having some fun.
It is just as dangerous as it sounds as the jumpers, possibly already unsteady on their feet due to boozing throughout the night, fail to clear the rope. Many end up with the burning rope on their shoulders and necks, an injury which has been listed on a travel tips website as something to avoid: "DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT FIRE. Just don’t. No. No. No. It’s never a good idea. We don’t care how drunk you are, how good you are at jump rope, or how fun it looks." [sic]
The full moon party has been going on since the early 1980s and mostly attracts tourists who are looking to make dangerous memories.
