"I’ve forgotten what normal’s like" - Darren Maule on #KZNFloods
Updated | By Scenic Drive With Rian
Radio personality Darren Maule gets candid on the Scenic Drive with Rian about the devastating effect of the recent KZN floods and how water shortages are still affecting thousands.
Darren Maule, East Coast Radio breakfast presenter and stand-up comedian, has shared some of the daily challenges he and other KwaZulu-Natalians are facing following the devastating floods in the province in April and May.
Maule told The Scenic Drive with Rian that he has newfound respect for water - a scarce resource in many communities after the floods destroyed crucial infrastructure.
He lives in an area to the north of Umhlanga where water supply has been intermittent for more than 50 days.
The situation in the area has sparked protests in oThongathi. Yesterday, angry locals again blocked off all entrances and exits of the area over the non-supply of water.

"I've forgotten what normal's like. I don't see a massive rush to get anything fixed," Maule told Rian van Heerden.
"When you have to walk two kilometres up a hill to a tanker with five litre bottles and then walk back with that, you have a newfound respect for that five litres, because you have sweated for it," says Maule.

A weather system generated floods in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province in April 2022, resulting in more than 300mm of rain in a 24-hour period. According to reports, most of the damage has occurred in the Durban area.
The
floods continued for a few days, leaving many family homes, businesses,
and properties destroyed. According to national authorities, 443 people
died.
More than 40,000 people were displaced, while nearly 4,000 houses were destroyed and more than 8,000 others were damaged, mostly across Durban and its surrounding areas. In response to the floods and landslides, rescue teams were deployed when a National State of Disaster was declared.
