American journalist Eve Fairbanks on why she loves South Africa

Journalist Eve Fairbanks graduated from Yale and has since taken her fascination with change - in history, in social relations, and in other fascinating things about the world - with her on her travels. She gets to a know a place through writing about it, which is how she came to muse about the student protests in South Africa and about the sokkie. 

Fairbanks said she experienced a fair amount of culture shock at the beginning of her time in South Africa, mainly with regard to the number of languages spoken. When asked about crime, she admits that she has mostly been a victim of crime by white perpetrators. 

Speaking about what she finds refreshing about South Africa, Fairbanks mentions that she has been pleasantly impressed by the primary health care facilities available to citizens. 

When asked why she has stayed in the country for so many years, Fairbanks says she loves the "rambunctiousness" of the country. She also says she is staying for the most common reason anyone would cite: love.
