American attacked in Cape Town – helps perpetrator after knife attack

Eric Czuleger from America spoke about the moment he helped his attacker.
Eric Czuleger (33), who is from Los Angeles, was assaulted with a large knife on Signal Hill, Cape Town. He ended up helping his attacker.

Czuleger was hiking along Signal Hill when a man, believed to be homeless, who was wearing a mask, suddenly appeared from under a fallen tree.
The man asked Czuleger if he was alone.

The man chased Czuleger and they ended up fighting until he got the knife away from him. He thought the attacker was concussed and bleeding heavily from the head, so he went into Green Point to seek first aid.
The man suddenly took out a knife and Czuleger ran for his life.

His foot got stuck while running downhill and lost his glasses while rolling a few metres.
The attacker caught up with him and Czuleger asked him what he wanted. ’’He said I had to give him money and my cellphone."
Czuleger then went and sat on the man to try to take away the knife, which ended up breaking.

’’He probably got a big fright because he said his hand got hurt badly, then he started crying hysterically. He pleaded with me to give him something.’’
Czuleger gave him his jersey and jacket and a pack of cigarettes.
Czuleger spoke to Rian van Heerden about the incident.
