A seven-month-old baby has been given a second chance at life after receiving a new heart two days before he was supposed to die.

CBS News reports that Lincoln Seay from Alaska, in the US was suffering from Heterotaxy syndrome; a heart defect that causes organs to develop on the opposite side of the body.

He had reportedly been looking for a heart transplant since November.

The surgeon who performed the procedure, Dr. D. Michael McMullan of Seattle Children's heart transplantation department says: "He was right on the edge. We have a list of patients and he was the one we were most concerned about."

The boy's father Rob Seay echoes Dr McMullan's sentiments: "The last two days, you could just tell they were his last days."

His mother Mindy shared how excited she was when she got the call about the new heart: "I immediately started shaking and crying while he told me all about the surgery, how it would go, when it would happen, what all the risks were, what after care might look like. Honestly, I think he talked for 20-30 minutes but I heard absolutely nothing after WE GOT A HEART!!!"

In a Facebook post, Mindy sent her gratitude to the donor, who cannot be named due to privacy laws:
