Nike sues MSCHF over Lil Nas X's 'Satan Shoes'
Nike says Lil Nas X's controversial 'Satan Shoes' were made without "approval or authorisation". The shoes, which contain a drop of human blood, sold out in less than a minute.
Nike is taking legal action against MSCHF following the release of its controversial 'Satan Shoes' collaboration with Lil Nas X.
The New York-based art collective teamed up Lil Nas X to make 666 pairs of limited edition 'Satan Shoes'. The custom Air Max 97 sneakers contain a drop of human blood and feature a bronze pentagram. MSCHF is selling the shoes for a whopping $1,018 (around R15,000). The 'Satan Shoes' sold out within a minute.
Nike distanced itself from the sneakers, saying it has no involvement in their creation whatsoever. The sports shoe giant has decided to sue the designers of the shoe for trademark infringement.
"There is already evidence of significant confusion and dilution occurring in the marketplace, including calls to boycott Nike in response to the launch of MSCHF's Satan Shoes, based on the mistaken belief that Nike has authorised or approved this product," the BBC quoted Nike as saying in its lawsuit.
Lil Nas X seems unbothered by Nike's legal action. He shared a meme on Instagram that shows Squidward from 'SpongeBob SquarePants' begging for money.
