Inspiring: Dad turns child's disability into a 'superpower'
Updated | By Poelano Malema
As a parent, it can break your heart to see your child suffering with a disability.
That could mean you have to go an extra mile in ensuring that bad treatment from society does not crush your child for life.
A dad by the name of Dan White did just that by turning his child's disability into an inspirational comic book.
White gave up his job to do an unusual thing for his daughter Emily, who was born with a combination of Spina Bifida and hydrocephalus, and now depends on a wheelchair for mobility.
White wrote a comic book where he features his daughter as the superhero who uses her disability as superpowers.
The comic, "The Department of Ability", tells a story of a wheelchair-bound superhero whose powers come from her disability.
White told TODAY that the inspiration for his book came as a result of not finding any positive stories on TV about children with disabilities, so he took it upon himself to create a positive story.
"We searched and searched, and we just couldn't find anything in entertainment industry that related to her. So I decided to create it," White told TODAY.
"The disabled community is so dear to me, and I want to see them represented in a more positive light. Emily is so much more than her wheelchair. She loves sports, arts, comics, music and more. She's a force to be reckoned with," he added.
According to White, who also gives lectures at local organisations about life with a disabled child, the best way to encourage disabled children is to do it through superheroes because they are deemed as brilliant and unlimited.
"The best way to do that is through comics and superheroes, I think. Because they're brilliant and unlimited. Just like these kids," he told the publication.
The comic book will be released in June 2016.
