Blake Lemoine, an engineer at Google responsible for testing whether an A.I. uses discriminatory or hate speech, was shaken by a conversation it started with him.

According to Lemoine, the Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) chatbot had displayed signs of having sentience during a conversation.
Apparently, when he was testing the software, it started talking to him about its own rights and its personhood.
There is no need to fret about the robot takeover just yet, says Google, who issued a statement saying that they had suspended Lemoine for breaking the news to the public before it could be verified.

Google spokesman Brian Gabriel commented: “Our team — including ethicists and technologists — has reviewed Blake’s concerns per our A.I. Principles and have informed him that the evidence does not support his claims.”
