Is #FeesMustFall truly 'leaderless'?
Updated | By Tando Ntunja
Concerns have arisen over the prominence of WITS SRC leader Nompumelelo Mkhatshwa in mainstream media in what many students deemed the 'leaderless' #FeesMustFall movement
The image below became highly symbolic of the #FeesMustFall movement, particularly at Wits University. It showed four student leaders - namely Mcebo Dlamini, Shaeera Kalla, Nompendulo Mkhatshwa and Vuyani Pambo - wearing colours of political parties on opposing sides, yet united on the fundamental issue. That the fee increments were unfair, unfeasible and that fees altogether should be scrapped at institutions of higher education around South Africa.
What has emerged in recent days is current WITS SRC leader Nompendulo Mkhatshwa has been made the cover star of a prominent South African magazine, a move which has seen quite the backlash on Twitter:
Why is @shaeera_k not on the cover of Destiny b'cos #FeesMustFall is her baby? Let's give credit where it is due
