Cash-in-transit heist money: What to do with it?

There have been a lot of cash-in-transit heists lately and some of that money unfortunately ends up back in circulation. 

Mack unknowingly got a R50 note tainted with ink from a shop and tried to use it to buy a bottle of water in a grocery store, to his shock the cashier refused to take the money saying it's stolen money and they're not allowed to take it. He proceeded to go to a few other stores to try and use the money but they all turned him down. 

The question now is, what happens when you're in possession of that money? Do you throw it away? Is it worthless? Is it evidence of a crime, should you take it to the police station?

We received counterfeit money at one of our charity events and didn't realize it was counterfeit until we took it to the bank. Has something like this ever happened to you?
