Danny Painter chats to Dr Tshepo P. Maaka, who alongside her daughter, animator Kabelo Maaka, is creating groundbreaking medical animation.
Thursday 28 October marks International Animation Day.
Two proudly South Africans, Dr Tshepo P. Maaka and her daughter Kabelo Maaka, are using animation to make the world a better place.
The two have teamed up to create a company called the Cabblow Studios, an award-winning South African animation and illustration film studio.
It was founded in 2017 and creates short films, series, and medical animation.
“As doctors, we don’t have time to explain things to patients when a consultation is 15 minutes,” Dr Maaka told Beautiful News.
“But if you can educate people on healthcare topics they can take care of themselves,” he added.

Their film, ‘3 Teaspoons of Sugar’, focuses on living with diabetes. It was so well-received that it even competed at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2020.
With COVID-19 being in the spotlight and affecting the whole world, Cabblow Studios has produced a bonus film focusing on the impact of COVID-19 on diabetes and comorbidities.
Buy or rent the short films directly on the Cabblow Studio’s website.
