Phubbing can destroy your relationship
Updated | By Danny Painter
Phubbing: snubbing someone in favor of your mobile phone. We've all done it. But it could be the most damaging thing for your relationship.
Phubbing. A made up word for a very real issue.
Picture this: You're at a beautiful restaurant overlooking the sea, crisp ocean air blowing through and you, although you're with the love of your life, may as well be alone. One word answers and very little conversation, as your partner scrolls through timeline after timeline without looking up from their phone. This is phubbing.
According to the Huffington Post researchers conducted two separate studies of 453 adults overall. For the purposes of the experiment, phubbing was defined as “the extent to which people use or are distracted by their cellphones while in the company of their relationship partners.”
“What we discovered was that when someone perceived that their partner phubbed them, this created conflict and led to lower levels of reported relationship satisfaction". This in turn leads to depression, the feeling of "not being enough'' and ultimately the possible demise of the relationship.
How do we solve this issue? It's such a simple answer it feels ridiculous to type. Put your phone away and out of range of sight when you are with another person.
