Lehlohonolo Mashifane: From living in a shack to owning the courtroom
Lehlohonolo Mashifane, like so many South Africans, had a rough start to his life. He lost his mother and brother at a very young age and was raised by his grandmother.
In his Matric year, he lost his mother to HIV/Aids. A year earlier, the disease took the life of his younger brother.

His passion for giving back and his positive outlook on life was cultivated during those difficult years. Raised by his grandmother, who supported both of them on her petrol attendant salary, he knew that in order to succeed and live the life of his dreams, he would have to fight and never give up, no matter how hard it got.

After being awarded for his Matric results, he was offered a scholarship to study law, where he says that although we assume that the person with the scholarship is now 'sorted', the financial hardships often continue well into tertiary, with the student having to decide between transport, books or food.
