Ricky Martin speaks about playing first gay character since coming out

It didn't take much to convince Ricky Martin to join the likes of Penelope Cruz and Edgar Ramirez in the upcoming 'The Assasination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story'
Apart from wanting to work with Ryan Murphy again after his cameo role in 'Glee,' the pop star is passionate about wanting this story to come to life.
In a recent interview Ricky spoke about how important this story is as it is one that goes mainstream with talking about homophobia, hate and indifference.
The 'Livin La Vida Loca' star will play the character of Antonio D'Amico, the Italian model and designer best known for being Gianni Versace's partner and lover.
The project marks several firsts for Ricky Martin including his first role as a gay man since he himself came out in 2010 and he admits that taking on the role has become a very special personal first because it allows him to speak on behalf of so many people who cannot be heard.
"There was a scene where Gianni is weak and almost falling on the beach and I touch him and he goes 'Don't touch me! Paparazzi!' You don't understand. That took me back to eight years ago when I was in the closet and it just moved me," says Martin, "We're going mainstream with a story that talks about homophobia, that talks about hate, that talks about indifference. I feel humbled. It's so raw and honest and so dramatic and sad."
