Ultra-Link: Supporting our matriculants to ace the 2020 final exams in the year of COVID-19

BACKGROUND: The Class of 2020 matriculants will be sitting for their first final exam on 19 October, when all candidates will write Life Orientation, and then the final exams start officially on 5 November and run until 15 December 2020.
The final school exams are extremely significant in the lives of school leavers and this is always a stressful time where extra support is needed. This year, amid the health crisis and national lockdown brought on by Covid-19, many school days were lost and matriculants spent a large part of the year at home. Many homes are not ideal for learning, with families struggling to provide basics like food, electricity and in many cases safety. Educators and the government are doing the best they can to prepare candidates, but focus and concentration on academics are not possible without a healthy diet and support at home, leaving the poor at a huge disadvantage.
With this in mind, Kagiso Capital and Growthpoint Properties will be investing R1,000,000 to assist matriculants who are most in need of these basics while preparing and writing the most important exams of their lives. Ultra-Link, the IT and Tech supply company for home and business, will sponsor high quality, comfortable masks to each learner assisted as well as thermometers and masks to their schools, to the value of R1.25-million.

One of the schools whose matriculants will benefit from this project, is Voortrekker Hoogte High School in Thaba Tshwane
Voortrekker Hoogte High School in Thaba Tshwane, Centurion is situated near the military precinct in Centurion. Around half of the learners in the school are from military families, but many learners are from nearby Olievenhoutbosch, Laudium, and even as far flung as Atteridgeville and Soshanguve.
Principal, Lana de Villiers says many school families have lost their income during the Covid-19 lockdown, which has impacted on the well-being of the learners. When it comes to matriculants and their preparations for the final exams, the learners and staff have been working around the clock to catch up and prepare.
One of the matriculants, Sithle Nkhalipi says this year has been especially difficult at home. Her dad has lost his eye-sight and are mom is the only breadwinner for their family of 7. Sihle feels the financial burden and she feels that doing well in her final exams would be a way to a better future for herself and her entire family. She want to be a business woman one day and business studies is her favourite subject.
Sibusiso Leseka and his younger brother live with foster parents, who are pensioners. Sibusiso lost his mom when he was 9 and he never knew his dad. He was particularly worried over the health of his elderly foster parents as he did not want them to contract Covid-19. Even though life has never been easy for Sibusiso, he is very grateful for the love and support of his foster parents and extended family, as well as his teachers. He is determined to do well in the final exams and has his eye on a future in electric engineering.
