Jacaranda FM listeners and GMA donate over R1,5-million to Driekhoek tragedy
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Renovations will also be done to Hoërskool Driehoek families' homes.
BACKGROUND:
On Wednesday, 6 February Jacaranda FM listeners opened their hearts to the families affected by the Hoërskool Driehoek tragedy. The country was reeling after the walkway collapse at the Vanderbijlpark school. The collapse happened as the children were leaving the morning assembly to go to their class rooms. Three pupils: Roydon Olckers, Jandré Steyn and Marli Currie died at the scene, with a fourth, Marnus Nagel perishing from his injuries two days later. More than 20 children were admitted to various hospitals around Gauteng for serious injuries. One of these children, 14-year old Shamoné Steynvaart, was next to her best friend, Marli when the concrete slab fell on them. Marli died on the scene and Shamoné was left paralysed from the waist down. Shamoné has been home for only a day since the accident and will spend at least another month in a rehab facility in Pretoria. Her mom, Charmaine says as a family, their lives have changed forever and for the first time, Charmaine has to leave her only child’s side, to go back to work.
1. Lekkerslaap.co.za
The amazing team at lekkeslaap.co.za sponsored seven nights’ accommodation in a top-class Pretoria B&B for Charmaine and Cobus Steynvaart when Shamoné was transferred from the Life Wilgers Hospital to the rehab centre, where she will be for up to 12 weeks. Accommodation for the rest of this rehab period is sponsored by a local church.
2. Listener “Kobus” and his team
Kobus and his construction team will renovate Shamoné’s gran’s home (which they own) to accommodate Shamoné’s new mobility reality. They will team up with Häfele South Africa, who will supply the correct fixtures in the bathroom and around the home to assist Shamoné. Another company, R&H Projects, will install a brand new aircon for Shamoné as part of the renovation. The team has already been to the house, they’ve drawn up the plans and will start the renovation soon - so that everything is ready and new when Shamoné returns home from rehab. Charmaine and Kobus live just across the road from granny and their landlord has also offered to alter their rented flat to accommodate Shamoné’s wheelchair needs.
