Good Morning Angels: Student fighting rare and aggressive cancer
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Michael has a very rare, aggressive form of cancer called a NUT Carcinoma. Even worse, his life expectancy is six to seven months.
BACKGROUND: Michael, 19, is a student at the University of Cape Town. He has a loving and supportive family: parents Johan and Hanneli and sister, Maruchelle. He came home to Randpark just before lockdown and at that stage, he was a healthy, happy young adult with a bright future. The only issue was - when would he be able to go back to varsity? In this time, Michael had a painful little lump in his neck. The doctor decided to remove it and sent it off for testing. The result was devastating Michael had a very rare, aggressive form of cancer called a NUT Carcinoma. Even worse, his life expectancy was six to seven months.
Michael has been for chemo and all sorts of treatment available in South Africa, paid for by medical aid. However, because of the time limit, his family has investigated alternative treatments abroad. This is not covered by his medical aid and his sister, Maruchelle, has created a donation page, “Fighting for Mike”, to raise R500,000 to give her brother every opportunity to find a possible treatment. They have amazingly already managed to raise R375,000, but need at least another R125,000 to have a shot at saving Michael’s life. A friend of the family, Marita Spowart, wrote to Good Morning Angels for assistance, as time is running out.
