Good Morning Angels: Spreading love and knowledge to children affected by Knysna fires

Spreading the love of books and the future, with children affected by the June Knysna Fires.
“Books are not something that children in this school grow up with at home. I bring my wife’s magazine when she’s done with them. That’s what we mostly do. That’s the recreational reading they are exposed to.”
Good Morning Angels visited Knysna last week to deliver the March-Sponsored fire truck 'Mikey J', but that’s not where we ended.
Our friends at the Round Table in the Southern Cape region heard that we were on our way and offered to assist the community in another way.
The Round Table were in Knysna when the fire devastation was at its worst, providing immediate help like food, clean drinking water, clothing, and shelter. Now they wanted to leave something lasting behind - to help the community keep an eye on a brighter future.
We decided to focus on the children of the areas that were worst hit by the fire.
We took brand new books to children who are not exposed to the joy of having bed time stories read to them, reading by themselves or to others.
We took “Mikey J” out on the road and visited two small 'farm' schools where children in different grades share a classroom.
Laerskool Ruigtevlei has 60 learners from Grades 1 to 6.
They are taught by Principal Richard Levendal and another teacher in two classrooms. The school received R25,000 worth of brand new Juta books from the Round Table.
The second school, Laerskool Redlands, is in Barrington. This school has 54 learners from Grades 1 to 7. They have a teacher and principal, John Avery.
According to John, there is talk that the school may be closed after 2019, as their numbers are dropping. He, however, is passionate about the school, its children, the community, and the value of what they do. They too received R25,000 worth of brand new Juta books from the Round Table.
Principal Avery was overjoyed: “Thank you for remembering us. The children can’t believe that they have been chosen. We are a bit far from the N2, so its easy to forget about us.”
