Good Morning Angels: Some festive cheer for a domestic worker after the KZN floods
The Good Morning Angels Festive Edition 2022 with Roman's Pizza continues. This time our recipients, domestic worker Maureen Lushaba and her family, get some festive cheer after the KZN floods.
BACKGROUND: Maureen Lushaba is a mom and grandmother, originally from KwaZulu-Natal. She left her family in KZN to look for work as a domestic helper in Pretoria because neither she nor her children could find employment in their home province.
With the money she earns, she keeps her entire family afloat. She misses them, but she has no option - she is the only breadwinner. Maureen’s daughter finished her Animal Science degree, but still owes R12,000 in study fees and therefore cannot get her degree, which she needs to find a job.
Maureen is also still paying off a loan she took to fix the roof of her family home that was damaged in last year’s devastating KZN floods. These are just some of her financial pressures. Maureen, however, is a joyful person, happy to be in a position to work.
Her path recently crossed with that of Megan McGee, who saw her walking and gave her a lift.
“I love giving lifts to domestic workers if I see they are walking with pain as I have a rare disease causing daily pain in my feet. I like hearing about their lives,” says Megan. When Megan heard Maureen’s story, she immediately wrote to Good Morning Angels to assist this "cheerful, beautiful soul, who is solely trying to keep her family afloat".

Good Morning,
I am Megan McGee. I work as a private tutor in Pretoria.
I love giving lifts to domestic workers if I see they are walking with pain (as I have a rare disease causing daily pain in my feet) or carrying heavy bags and when I do, I like hearing about their lives etc.
Last week I gave Maureen Lushaba a lift, and what a beautiful lady she is inside and out. I asked her many questions and found out that she actually lives in KZN and so does her entire family (two children and grandchildren), but she has to stay in Pretoria as it’s the only place she could find a job as a domestic worker.
She supports them all as they cannot find jobs despite desperately trying.
Her daughter has completed her degree in Animal Science, but the University is refusing to hand over her Degree as there is an outstanding amount of R12 000 for her studies, growing each month because of interest rates. She is now looking for any job she can find at creches etc, but unsuccessfully so.
To add to all of this, Maureen has recently had to take out a loan to rebuild the roof of her house, which was severely damaged by the recent KZN floods. There were other material losses as well, but they will have to wait.
