Good Morning Angels: Helping Door of Hope give unwanted babies a home

BACKGROUND: "Abandonment of infants in South Africa is, unfortunately, a common occurrence. Many of these children are left to die, or simply abandoned, in dustbins, open fields, public toilets, or on train tracks.”  This reality has become even direr during lockdown in South Africa with poverty playing a key role in abandonment.

During the past almost four months, 25 babies have been found dead after being abandoned. Another 118 babies have been placed in care - of these 59 were abandoned, babies.

This is where the Door of Hope provides invaluable labour of love. The Door of Hope started in 1999 when the Berea Baptist Mission Church made a hole in the wall called a “Baby Box”, where unwanted babies could be placed, rather than being left to die.

Over the last two decades, Door of Hope has provided a refuge and safe haven for 1714 babies. Of these children, 740 have been adopted by loving new families.

Door of Hope has grown to three houses and they are currently building a Children’s Village, for older children who haven’t been adopted yet. They are currently caring for 73 babies and children … and the need is growing by the day.
