Good Morning Angels Festive Edition: Supporting the Broken Wings Centre
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
The Angels came together to help a centre that cares for disabled adults. The Good Morning Angels Festive Edition is proudly sponsored by Roman's Pizza.
BACKGROUND: Special needs children become special needs adults, who have to stay busy and productive. In fact, there are at least eight million differently-abled people in South Africa. Very few go to school or get training or education. Not many of those who do, get employment as adults.
However, they still crave social interaction, purpose and stimulation in a safe environment. Places like these are difficult to find and that’s why three women started the Broken Wings Centre in Alberton in 1998.
"A family coping with disability 24-hours a day is emotionally and financially draining - and that’s why Broken Wings was born.”
This day facility teaches up to 35 people at a time to do crafts of all kinds, along with adult literacy, cookery, sewing, dancing and singing. The centre is privately funded, with no help from the state and has over the years impacted the lives of many families. One such family is the De Beers, whose 21-year old son, Runaldo has recently started at Broken Wings.
Runaldo was 14-months old when he developed a very high fever, which left him disabled. His mom, Annalize admits it has been very challenging to raise a special needs child, “but when I’ve had a long day and he wraps his arms around me saying, 'I love you mommy', it’s all worthwhile.”
I am so thankful for a place like Broken Wings and I don’t know how they do what they do, with the little money they get. That’s why Annalize wrote to Good Morning Angels to ask for some assistance for these angels who take care of the vulnerable and give hope where there is little or none.

ORIGINAL REQUEST:
Today, I am sending you this email for my son, Runaldo that just started at Broken Wings Centre as a disability member. What a phenomenal team doing and caring so much for them with as little as what they have!
I am, as a parent reaching out for all help possible. The centre started in 1998 with three ladies who felt the need to assist and address the problem of adults living with disabilities in our society, without any help from the Government. A family coping with disability 24-hours a day is emotionally and financially drained and I decided to seek help to make their days unforgettable at the Centre.
Having conversations with the Centre Manager, Chantelle de Sousa, I could read between the lines that they are in need where they are feeding the members with breakfast and lunch. They are counting on the monthly fees paid by the Members which some are getting sponsored.
If someone could please find it in their hearts to donate the following, this will already be of great help.
- Concrete garden furniture
- Dishwasher for the kitchen
- Tables & chairs (for the inside of the centre)
- Pagoda’s or gazebo’s
- Safe sports equipment (such as goal with net, soft soccer ball, badminton sets, etc.)
- Stationery etc.
I truly pray and hope that my email will make a difference.
Thank you for taking the time to read my email.
Regards and love,
Annalize de Beer
