GMA Coronavirus Support: Taking care of 170 vulnerable children during lockdown
For more than 60 years, The Abraham Kriel Children’s home in Modimolle/Nylstroom has been a refuge for children who cannot live at home or do not have families.
BACKGROUND: The home currently has 170 children between the ages of eighteen months and nineteen years in their care. Children are placed in the Children’s Home by means of a court order as a result of child abuse, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, lack of parental skills, family violence, and other factors that might endanger the lives of children. The home needs around R400,000 a month to fulfill all the children’s needs. The home is subsidised by the state, but that only covers half of the expenses - the rest is generated through fundraising and donations. Many of the children are usually placed with families during school holidays - but this is not possible under lockdown. Many of the home’s regular monthly donors are also not able to contribute, as they themselves are struggling financially. The Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Modimolle/Nylstroom has put out a plea for help and a fundraising number. SMS “FONDS” to 39236 to contribute R15.
