GMA Coronavirus Support: Keeping bellies full during the national lockdown
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
The majority of South Africans face poverty and hunger every day... even before the national lockdown.
Thousands of families are dependent on government grants. For those who can, these small incomes are supplemented by piece jobs and day labour, which is not possible during the national lockdown. There is also a large group of people who are not on the government grant scheme, who live from day-to-day to keep their families fed. During the lockdown, they are simply without an income to fulfill their families’ most basic needs: food. Organisations like Hanna Charity are logistically placed to reach many of these families, who are now suddenly in dire need of daily nutrition. However, they need donations of food to distribute meals where it’s needed most.
REQUEST FOR: Hanna Grobler, Founder of Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation
ANGEL 1: Retha Ingenbleeck, Spar North Region
SPONSORING: The Spar North Region will donate R20,000 to Hanna Charity to buy food for the many families they feed. Spar has also started their Spar Get Real Challenge, flipping the egg challenge, and asking people to rather donate 6 eggs, 1 liter of milk, and 1kg of maize meal at all Spar stores. These contributions will be donated to various organisations to help feed the hungry during the lockdown.
ANGEL 2: The Good Morning Angels Fund NPC
SPONSORING: The GMA Fund will match that donation with R20,000 in AngelRands towards Hanna Charity’s community feeding programs. #AngelRands is Jacaranda FM Good Morning Angel’s own electronic voucher, managed and distributed on our behalf byeVoucher.mobi (powered by Celbux).

ORIGINAL REQUEST:
Hi Good Morning Angels,
I hope you are safe and sound. Well done on the amazing work that you are doing at the moment! It is incredible to see how Jacaranda FM is extending so much support to people in need.
Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation, now in its 12th year as a registered NPO & NGO continues to work tirelessly in the communities to uplift and support people in poverty. Naturally, due to the lockdown, our Pikanini Educare centers are not able to operate (which for many of those kids, is the only meal they get per day), and neither are our soup kitchens, our womanhood support groups, our clothing hand out days, etc. However, our area managers do have permits to drive around and are doing their best to get food parcels to all of the families we support.
We have also lowered the number of people we are serving, based on the more dire needs, because of our limited capacity.
We are currently feeding people in these areas in Gauteng and Mpumalanga:
- Elandspoort, Pretoria West: 370 people
- Westford Squatter Camp, Pretoria West: 180 people
- Sonop Caravan Park, Benoni: 410 people
- Our community group in Boksburg North: 450 people
- Our community in Wolmer, Pretoria North: 380 people
- Jan Niemand Park, East Lynne, Pretoria: 350 people
- Leandra Area in Mpumalanga: 400 people
This is the absolute minimum that we are helping each week with food and groceries. The gratitude these people express for even the smallest donation is incredible.
If there is any way that you could include us in the outreach to get #AngelRands or grocery vouchers, we would be most grateful!
Regards,
Hanna Charity
