December holidays - Are the beaches safe for play?
KZN has been struck by many difficulties in recent times, and most recently, the province has been struggling with contaminated water sources. This brings the question of whether it is safe to take a beach holiday this December. Journalist Christelle du Toit explores the topic.
Earlier this year, the eThekwini Municipality had to close a number of public beaches because E.Coli bacteria levels in the water were not within acceptable limits.

Due to the E.Coli levels in the water, people were prohibited from surfing, swimming and other water related activities in order to protect them from infection.
The municipality took measures to help alleviate the problem and make the beaches safe for locals and visitors alike. Their efforts have led to the opening of certain beaches.
The beaches that have been opened include:
- Point
- uShaka
- Addington
- South
- Wedge
- North
- Bay of Plenty
- Battery
- Country Club
- Brighton
- Reunion
- Pipeline
- Toti Main
- Warner

Some beaches remain closed for safety, and these include:
- Westbrook
- Bronze
- Laguna
- Thekwini
- uMhlanga
- uMdloti
- uMgababa
So, while it looks like beach holidays are a go in KZN, it is important for people to note that their are fewer locations than before to enjoy the beach.
