South Africans could be hit hard by load-shedding before the end of June 2020, according to energy expert Ted Blom.

Blom is a senior energy and mining and commodities strategist and tactician. He joined Breakfast with Martin Bester telephonically to explain the current state of Eskom.

South Africa is on Day 49 of the national lockdown. President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on 13 May at 20:30 about Level 3 being implemented by the end of May, but some areas with high infection rates will remain at Level 4.

"By the end of June, increased demand due to the winter season paired with a lack of new maintenance and problems associated with reactivating disabled power units will result in heavy load-shedding," Blom explained.

"If we have a ‘fast switch on’, we could see fireworks. The submission stations aren’t made to be switched on and off.

"The mines use 70% of South Africa’s power. However, the mines have been switched off during lockdown which means it will gradually be operating again which will result in load shedding."
