Local scientists who discovered Omicron make TIME 100 Most Influential list

Two African scientists that discovered the COVID-19 Omicron variant have been selected as part of TIME Magazine's Most Influential People of 2022 list.
Professor Tulio de Oliveira and Dr Sikhulile Moyo, who discovered the COVID-19 Omicron variant, have been selected for TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2022 feature.
In a press release sent to Jacaranda FM, the UKZN (University of KwaZulu-Natal) wished to congratulate Professor Tulio de Oliveira and Dr Moyo for being honoured by TIME Magazine.

"Professor de Oliveira is the head of Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) and University of KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP)
"Dr Moyo serves as laboratory director at the Botswana Harvard Aids Institute Partnership (BHP)."
In November of 2021, Prof De Oliveira and Dr Moyo "led the multidisciplinary team of researchers and scientists" who discovered the Omicron variant.
For many, it is seen as an honour to make the TIME 100 list and a way to recognise the great work these scientists have done.

Each year, TIME Magazine releases a list of the 100 most influential people.
The list includes politicians, academics, journalists, and celebrities who they believe have changed the world.
"The list, now in its nineteenth year, recognises the impact, innovation and achievement of the world’s most influential individuals."
