A new study found that one item in your kitchen poses more health risks than many other items...
A new study from the Journal of Food Protection found that spice containers might carry more germs than any other item in your kitchen.
According to the study, one in five cases of foodborne illnesses is acquired in the home.

"The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and degree of cross-contamination across a variety of kitchen surfaces during a consumer meal preparation event."
The study found that spice containers carry a higher risk of bacterial cross-contamination from one substance to another.

Forty-eight percent of spice containers sampled during the study tested positive for MS2 cross-contamination. This is up to 28% more than other items samples in the study.
This suggests that spice containers might be key in cross-contamination around the house.
It is important to note that the efficiency of MS2 cross-contamination transfer was relatively low, "ranging from 0.002 to 0.07%."
