Elma Smit and crew robbed at gunpoint in Cape Town
Breakfast with Martin Bester’s Sport anchor Elma Smit was the victim of an armed robbery whilst filming in Cape Town over the weekend.
More than R500 000 worth of equipment was stolen when presenter Elma Smit and her team were interviewing Babalwa Latsha, a South African women’s rugby player, in Khayelitsha at 08:30, when they were confronted by a group of men with firearms.
Among the equipment stolen were cameras, lights, audio equipment, a smartphone, wallet, camera bag and memory cards. The footage of Babalwa was stolen as well as footage of Pieter-Steph du Toit that they filmed the day before.

Elma Smit spoke to Martin Bester about her unfortunate experience over the weekend. Elma Smit says she is doing okay under the circumstances but feels for Babalwa, “It was a story of hope and I’m utterly disappointed. After we lodged a complaint, the police drove behind us until we reached the highway. Babalwa is the one staying behind because she wants to make a difference in her community.”
